Let’s Pause was born from lived experience. On April 12, 2010, at just 24 years old, our founder Steve nearly lost his life to an alcohol and drug overdose. After years of hiding behind a smile and pretending everything was fine, he hit a breaking point. That day, a doctor told Steve’s father, “We don’t think he’s going to make it.”
Three days on life support. Severe hearing loss. And yet, Steve still couldn’t admit he needed help. Vulnerability wasn’t something he knew how to embrace—it felt like weakness. But everything changed when his mom handed him a handwritten letter; his resume of consequences from alcohol and drug use and how it was affecting her. She was his #1, and that moment cracked the denial. Days later, Steve walked into a 30-day rehab program, followed by two years in a halfway house. Life’s problems didn’t go away when he got sober, he was just now having to learn how to deal with them.
Fifteen years sober, Steve built Let’s Pause to be the app he wished existed back then: a platform to find inspiration; a place to talk about addiction, stress, succes and everything in between. A tool used to inspire people to take action to realize their potential. A platform to make sure nobody feels alone in their situation, because so many have been there.
Most of all, Steve wanted to create an app where the stories that make us human are the stories that make us heroes.
